Our Community

The blues, jazz, rock, Southern gospel are among the genres of American popular music that legitimately trace their roots to Muscle Shoals and the surrounding area.  Why such a prodigous outpouring of popular music? We often say it has to be something in "the water."  "The water" is the Tennessee, one of the nation's greatest rivers, now impounded forming a series of lakes which slice through the two-county Muscle Shoals area.   The major cities are Florence (40,000), Muscle Shoals (15,000) and Sheffield and Tuscumbia (each about 10,000).  They are surrounded by small suburbs, farms and forests, and collectively count about 150,000 inhabitants.

Large enough to host a symphony, several live theatrical groups, a four-star resort hotel and spa, major conference center, and a regional university with over 7,000 students, the community is still small enough to seem like a collection of friendly neighhoods.  The lakes that lap the shores of three of fhe four cities are renown for fishing, sailing and pleasure boating.  Overlooking the river are two public golf courses in the famed Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

Access is easy by way of several four-lane highways, which connect the Shoals with Birmingham (120 miles), Nashville (120 miles) and Memphis (140 miles).  The bustling space city of Huntsville is about an hour to the east.  For a more liesurely pace, tour along the Natchez Trace Parkway which connects the Shoals with Nashville, Tupelo and Natchez Mississippi.
